Workshop on “Behavioural Insights for Better Waste Management”

8 Oct 2026

From 14 to 16 September 2026, an interim workshop for the ‘Behavioural Insights for Better Waste Management’ project was held at the Morinomiya Campus of Osaka Metropolitan University. This workshop was part of a project funded by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation and was co-organised by the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC) in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme International Environmental Technology Centre, Osaka City, Osaka Metropolitan University and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).

The workshop was attended by 75 participants from 21 nationalities, including local government officials, researchers, representatives from international organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), social enterprises, private companies and project partners.

During the workshop, prior to drafting the project’s final report, the interim results of the project were reviewed with practitioners from around the world, and participants gained a broad understanding of related approaches and Osaka City’s experience in waste management. The first day focused on evidence, the second on tools and practices, and on the third day, participants visited recycling facilities and other sites as part of the Osaka City programme.

Moving forward, we will incorporate the findings from this workshop into a revised set of recommendations and further deepen our analysis of the project. We also plan to consider the proposals put forward by participants regarding a series of webinars and co-design training workshops. Furthermore, as the project received high praise from many participants describing it as a highly valuable and important initiative, this proved to be an extremely beneficial opportunity that laid the foundations for the next phase of the project.
