About UNEP DTIE International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC)

In 1989, Osaka City Government announced a plan to attract an international environmental organization to the city in order to disseminate and apply Osaka's successful experience with urban environmental management. As a result of efforts by the national Japanese and local Osaka Governments, a resolution to establish the UNEP International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) was unanimously approved at the 16th Session of the UNEP Governing Council. Its mandate is the adoption, application and operation of Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) in developing countries and countries with economies in transition, and officially began its activities in 1994. The Osaka office handles management of urban environmental issues, and the Shiga office handles management of freshwater resources.
