International Expert Group Workshop on Compendium of Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) for Converting Waste Plastics into a Resource, 15-16 June 2009, Osaka, Japan

The governments in most of developing countries are facing a major challenge to manage rapidly growing waste plastics. To build the capacity in developing on waste plastics management, UNEP-DTIE-IETC is implementing a project titled, "Converting Waste Plastics into a Resource" based on 3R approach. This project aims to mitigate the environmental problems caused by waste plastics and to promote the conversion of waste plastics into useful resource. GEC as a supporting organisation for UNEP, is involved in some of the project activities.

One of the project activities is to develop Compendium of Technologies for waste plastics conversion. To support this activity, Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC) organized an "International Expert Group Workshop on Compendium of Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) for Converting Waste Plastics into a Resource" on 15-16 June 2009, in Osaka, Japan in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) International Environmental Centre (IETC). This workshop was aimed to get inputs from international experts from various developing and developed countries on the draft Compendium of Technologies. Based on the comments and recommendations from the experts, final draft of Compendium of Technologies will be produced for dissemination and pilot projects.

Over 30 international and national experts on waste plastics technologies, representatives of private sector and government officials, participated in the workshop and held active discussions on technologies for converting waste plastics into energy source, business to business partnerships with support mechanism from governments and data collection and analysis for identification and implementation of the appropriate technologies were held.,.
