Title of Feasibility Study (FS)CDM Feasibility Study for Aerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge in Pingdingshan Sewage Treatment Plants, China
FYFY 2009
Main Implementing EntityPacific Consultants Co.,Ltd.
FS Partner(s)JCE Co.,Ltd.
Location of Project ActivityChina (Pingdingshan City, Henan Province)
Summary of FS ReportSummary(PDF 498KB)
Description of Project ActivityThis project is aimed to reduce the methane emission from anaerobic decay of sewage sludge by avoiding the current unmanaged dumping. Instead, sewage sludge will be applied in an aerobic composting technique. Sewage sludge will be mixed with culture medium of aerobically growing bacterium "YM aerobes" which decomposes organic materials at ultra-high temperature.
Targeted GHGCH4
Category of Project ActivityWaste Management
CDM/JICDM
Duration of Project Activity/ Crediting Period2010–2020/ 2010-2020
Methodology to be appliedAMS-III.F "Avoidance of methane emissions through controlled biological treatment of biomass"
Baseline ScenarioSewage sludge is currently sent to landfill site for unmanaged dumping which will cause anaerobic digestion. There could be potential methane emission from this activity and then methane gas is generated and emitted to the atmosphere.
Demonstration of AdditionalityAdditionality is demonstrated through an investment barrier, i.e. a financially more viable alternative to the project activity would have led to higher emissions. The demonstration of investment barriers is guided by the use of the "Tool for the demonstration and assessment of additionality".
Estimation of GHG Emission Reductions18,875tCO2/year
Monitoring PlanProject participants have an operational and management structure in place to monitor emission reductions from the project activity. A composting plant manager will be responsible to assign his subordinates to collect and report the monitoring parameters and verify them monthly.
Environmental Impact AnalysisChinese authorities do not require any environmental impact analysis for sewage sludge composting of the project activity and the environmental impacts are considered insignificant.
Project FeasibilityProject participants established a special purpose company. Design, promotion and construction of facility are going to be conducted by October, 2010.
Pollutants Emissions ReductionThe composting will reduce the negative environmental impacts of sewage sludge treatment in terms of anaerobic decay of organic materials in unmanaged open dumping sites, such as groundwater contamination, nuisance odor and so on.
Contribution to Sustainable Development in Host CountryThe sewage treatment plants will be encouraged to adopt cleaner technology that facilitates the reuse of waste. The project satisfies the environment sustainability by improving air, soil and water quality and minimizing the waste from sewage treatment plants by composting.
